Caterpillar Updates

The caterpillar metamorphosis is being well documented (I'm a little obsessed). I don't think I ever did this as a kid, so I'm completely fascinated by the whole process. The caterpillar has now started turning into a chrysalis. We've also confirmed that it will be a Gulf Fritillary, which is the same as the butterflies I saw around the vine where I found the caterpillars. Picture updates are being posted at our flickr site.

This brings back WONDERFUL memories...years ago, back in Miami, my kids and I had a butterfly birthing center in our living room. The caterpillars were given to me by a friend who had them on her dill. And there were even tiny eggs so more caterpillars emerged.

To this day, the smell of fresh dill takes me back to the wondrous watching of the process. My children each had the delight of having a newly-emerged butterfly perch on their hands, slowly waving wet wings until they dried and it took off on its first flight.

Enjoy!
